We have all heard that high blood pressure is the silent killer. And that sodium levels in packaged food is contributing to an epidemic of high blood pressure in Canada.

New Democrats have introduced a Bill to create a sodium-reduction strategy for Canada to address this critical public health issue.

Nearly 75 percent of the sodium in our diets comes from pre-packaged food.

Would a public inquiry really do anything to curtail the staggering rates of violence that plague Canada's aboriginal women?

After police discovered the body of a 16-year-old native girl in British Columbia last Wednesday, the Assembly of First Nations renewed its calls for an inquiry into the disappearance and murder of more than 600 aboriginal women.

It is a sad truth that poverty and violence are inextricably linked in many Canadian households.

That is why I recently gave a Member’s Statement on this issue in the House of Commons. I said:

“Mr. Speaker, on December 6, Canadians paused to remember the 14 women from Montreal's École Polytechnique. Every day, women endure countless acts of violence, just because they are women. December 6 is a day of mourning and a reminder that we must take action.

New Democrats will continue to study today’s decision and consult with those affected by it.

This ruling could have a major impact on Aboriginal jurisprudence in Canada. For the first time, the federal court has recognized Métis and non-status First Nations citizens as “Indians” under Section 91(24) for the Constitution Act, 1867.
