Mr. Speaker, a court case in Vancouver is shaking
residential school survivors' trust in our judicial system.

While the facts of the case are before the courts, nearly
1,400 survivors' claims are sitting in limbo while the deadline for the
independent assessment process fast approaches.

What is the minister going to do to make sure that these
survivors are not victimized once again?

Mr. Speaker, the current government has money for its friends, but not for ordinary Canadians. While the Prime Minister is musing about cutting benefits to seniors, cuts to Service Canada are already hurting Canadian seniors. Some Canadians are waiting six to eight months just to get their CPP or old age security. They do not have eight months of savings in the bank. They cannot pay for food and they cannot pay for their medications.

Why does the government want to make the problems worse by cutting more services to Canadians?

Ms. Jean Crowder (Nanaimo—Cowichan, NDP): Mr. Speaker, for the last year and a half, first nation chiefs have been asking to meet with the Prime Minister and discuss the housing crisis on first nation reserves. After years of government inaction, it tragically took this crisis in Attawapiskat for him to finally take up the invitation. More than just talk is needed.

Is the government finally prepared to work with first nations and take real action to solve this crisis?

Mr. Speaker, the government has replaced 1,000 real people at Service Canada
with voicemail and it calls that progress. Any Canadian who has ever been

Mr. Speaker, we learned today just how badly the government is failing families. A whopping 851,000 Canadians used food banks in March 2011 alone, the second highest number ever. The Conservatives boast about their recession fighting skills, but food bank use has jumped 26% since 2008.
