Statement from Jean Crowder, Official Opposition critic for Aboriginal Affairs, on the passing of Elijah Harper

On behalf of the New Democratic Party of Canada, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the family of Elijah Harper; his wife Anita Olsen Harper, his children Bruce and Holly, and his step-children Karen, Dylan, Gaylen and Grant.

OTTAWA–The federal government is appealing a court decision that ordered Ottawa to help pay for the care of a severely disabled teenager on the Pictou Landing First Nation in Nova Scotia.

The case was launched last year by the Pictou Landing band council in an effort to force the federal government to help Maurina Beadle care for her teenage son Jeremy.

Beadle has cared for Jeremy his entire life. But after suffering a stroke in 2010, Beadle had to bring in outside help with that care. Those costs can be as high as $8,000.00 a month.

A low-profile but controversial private member’s bill to repeal antiquated sections of the Indian Act will likely result “in many harsh, unintended consequences” for First Nations peoples, says the Canadian Bar Association and opposition MPs say it should be withdrawn.

Want a three-day, federally paid holiday?

That's what innocent Canadians suspected of terrorism will get under newly passed Bill S-7, to the chagrin of Cowichan NDP Jean Crowder whose party fought the bill affecting our Combating Terrorism Act.

The bill passed in Parliament about a week ago.

"We're opposed to it," she told the News Leader Pictorial. "It's the ongoing erosion of civil liberties in this country."

Federal aboriginal affairs critics say they won’t support proposed legislation respecting drinking water on Canada’s First Nations unless the controversial bill is amended.

In particular, New Democrat and Liberal MPs say issues such as liability, native rights and funding for water and wastewater infrastructure must be addressed before the Safe Drinking Water for First Nations Act will earn their approval.
