In 2009, Worksafe BC compensated 60 British Columbians for illness from exposure to asbestos.
Many of those were people in the construction industry, some who were exposed to asbestos in building materials including asbestos tile, drywall compound or vermiculite insulation while working on construction sites.
Others are being exposed today as they refurbish or demolish older buildings without knowledge of the materials used in their construction.
With all our regulations and knowledge, we still need to take steps to protect workers from the dangers of asbestos.
